Artwork Using Plastic Bags Grabs Several Awards

Here at Rubbish Please we’re always on the lookout for exciting ways to use rubbish and waste. We recently came across an idea that has been winning awards in the Philippines. It has been used as part of a campaign to highlight the harm plastic bags inflict on the environment.

An advertising and consumer engagement agency called Lowe Philippines have used donated plastic bags to create 3 thought provoking murals. Currently on display at SM Aura in Bonifacio Global City they’ve bagged (excuse the pun) international awards including one at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and at the United Print Media Group’s Tinta Awards.

The inspiration for the artwork came from the SM Eco Bag, which was introduced in 2009 by SM Prime Holdings Inc, as an eco-friendly alternative to the plastic shopping bag. But it’s not just plastic bags that make these creative pieces.

Plastic Dudes

Other litter including plastic wrappers and covers have been put together to depict scenes that occur during the flooding season in the Philippines. Highlighting the harm plastic bags do when disposed of they’re seen as encouragement for shoppers to find something better and to dispose of rubbish responsibly. To add to the message viewers of the murals can donate their plastic bags to be used in a fourth piece of art.

SM and Lowe are working together to make people in the country realise the harm they’re doing when discarding rubbish on the streets. Blocked drains, caused in some part by discarded plastic bags, have contributed to flooding issues across the Philippines and these two companies are collaborating to address the issue and change the way people dispose of their waste. The artworks are four feet square and the 3 pieces are titled “Kids”, “Dudes” and “Grandma”. They are a free addition to the shopper’s day in the Mall but also aim to impart a sense of responsibility and a way to remember the issue of pollution.
